The image that often comes to mind when thinking of hill stations is a retreat from the heat and dust of the plains—beautiful valleys and a cool, refreshing climate. While Central India is known for its hot and humid summers due to its topography, there are still a few places where you can escape the scorching heat. Climb the sloping hills or simply enjoy the scenic beauty of nature.
Although the Central region has fewer hill stations because of its mostly flat terrain, there are still some lovely options for a peaceful getaway.
Mainpat
Locally known as Mini Tibet, Mainpat is a hill station formed by a group of 62 plateaus. It is a charming destination with many cultural and natural sites. The area is rich in waterfalls, Sal forests, medicinal plants, and diverse wildlife. Its valleys and hills feature beautiful waterfalls such as Tiger Point—where tigers once roamed—and Fish Point. Other notable attractions include Buddhist temples, Dhakpo Monastery, the Tibet Refugee Camp, Mehta Point, Pharphatia, Jaljali, and Tatapani. Known for its scenic beauty, monasteries, and Tibetan settlements, Mainpat is also popular for trekking and rock climbing.
Panchmahri
Fondly called the Satpura ki Rani, Panchmahri is located at an elevation of 1,000 m. Its lush greenery and cool climate throughout the year make it a perfect retreat from the summer heat. As a saucer-shaped hill station, it offers all the natural beauty one desires—waterfalls, streams, wildlife, and rare medicinal plants. Victorian churches, colonial-era bungalows, and historic cemeteries lend the town a distinctly colonial atmosphere.
Satpura – Tamiya Hill Station
Similar to Panchmahri, Tamiya is located in the heart of the Satpura National Park. It is a scenic and less crowded destination. The sunset point, Satpura Hills, Panchmahri Biosphere Reserve, Catholic Church, and Rajendra Giri are among the must-visit attractions in the Satpura–Tamiya region.
