Temples
The temples of West India are worth visiting. The pillars and columns are intricately and artistically designed. Some of the finest temples date back to the 10th century, the most notable being the Ghatesvara Temple at Badoli and the Ambika Mata Temple at Jagat. Nagara-style architecture is predominantly followed in West Indian temples. This region is also known for Buddhist architecture. The most famous temples are located across Gujarat, Goa and Maharashtra. Important pilgrimage sites include the Dwarkadheesh Temple, Somnath, Elephanta Cave Temple, Sri Mahalakshmi Temple and many more.
Beaches
Get into your beachwear or Bermudas – soft golden sands, cool frothy waves and the soothing sea breeze of the beaches of Western India beckon you to relax and rejuvenate yourself! The western coast of India has an extensive shoreline running parallel to the Arabian Sea and offers more than a dozen stunning beaches. Some of the finest beaches are in Goa, world-famous for their scenic views and water sports; in Mumbai, known for relaxing surroundings and panoramic vistas; in Gujarat; and in Maharashtra. Popular beaches include Anjuna, Calangute, Gorai, Aksa, Tithal, Somnath and others.
Culture and Heritage
Western India is known as the land of historical edifices. The region is home to numerous monuments such as forts, palaces, caves, temples, churches and other cultural landmarks. Some monuments still retain their ancient splendour, while others stand in graceful ruins. Examples include the whitewashed chapels and churches of Goa, Mumbai’s Gothic architecture seen in the Gateway of India, Mumbai High Court, Old Secretariat, University Buildings and Victoria Terminus. Not to be missed is the ancient city of Aurangabad and the spectacular rock-cut caves of Ajanta and Ellora.
Wildlife
West India is considered a jewel of Indian wildlife. It emerges as a significant wildlife destination located around the Aravalli ranges and the coastal areas of the Arabian Sea. The moderate climate supports a diverse range of flora and fauna. Important wildlife sanctuaries in the region include Sasangir Sanctuary, Sanjay Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary, Wild Ass Sanctuary, Kutch Bustard Sanctuary and the Gaga Wildlife Sanctuary. The best way to explore these national parks is through a jungle safari or elephant safari.
