Overview
Uttar Pradesh is a state in India is known for its rich mythological heritage and sacred pilgrim sites. It has the maximum population among any of the states in India and holds vast land touching New Delhi, Nepal, Bihar and Uttarakhand on its borders. One of the recent states, Uttarakhand was once a part of Uttar Pradesh itself before separating a decade before.

Owing to its rich cultural heritage and several Hindu pilgrim sites, the state is also known as the Cow Belt/Hindu Belt of India. The state itself boasts of an ancient history and also finds mention in the Vedic Age. A number of mythological legends such as Ramayana and Mahabharata are said to be conceived here. In addition, a number of popular Hindu and Muslim poets Indian history ever had belong to this state.

However, it is not just the Hindu religion that was nurtured and loved here. It was in this state that Jainism and Buddhism in their nascent stage gained popular existence and large following before establishing themselves worldwide. The spot where Lord Buddha died also falls in the state.
While agriculture remains the predominant occupation of most people, the state is one of the top grain-producers in India. The temperature varies from 4-41 C and people here are religious and have a natural affinity for academics. This comes from the state’s reputation of having some of the most learned academic institutes and universities. The revered River Ganges flows through Varanasi, making it one of the most visited spots by tourists here.

Lucknow

The state’s Capital, and one of the best places to get a taste of colonial era India and its architecture. A major attraction is the Bara Imambara, a shrine which is essentially an imambara complex built back in 1784. Also, don’t forget to gorge on Lucknawi/Mughal delicacies while here.

Varanasi (Banaras)
Known as one of the oldest cities among all civilizations, Varanasi is known as the humble abode of Lord Shiva as well. River Ganges flows from here, and it is said that a dip in the holy waters free you from all your sins. Thousands of devotees come here every year to take a dip of salvation here as well as to find moksha.

Sarnath
This is said to be the place where Lord Buddha first preached his gospel. Also, the place where he breathed his last, now a popular spot among Buddhists is also nearby.


Mathura & Vrindavan

This is the supposed home of another popular God from Hindu mythology, Lord Krishna. The entire place is like a beautiful scenery with temples, exquisite decoration and folk music and dance, thus creating a compelling scene.

Allahbad
The place holds the world-famous Kumbh ka Mela as it happens to be one of the four main sits for the magnificent festival. The festival happens once every 12 years and gathers humongous amount of crowd to offer their devotion.

Agra
Thanks to its internationally popular Taj Mahal, Agra is a prime tourist destination for most of those travelling to India for the first time. Rich with architectural delights, popular attractions include Fatehpur Sikri, Agra Fort and the majestic monument of love, Taj Mahal.
