Yuksom: Meeting Place of Three Lamas

YuksomSikkim is full of surprises—surreal, spectacular and stunning! These are the first words that come to mind when one thinks of travel to Sikkim. The state has a certain composure that is gracefully complemented by its breathtaking landscapes.

A fine example of Sikkim’s untouched beauty can be seen in the fairy-tale village of Yuksom. Tucked picturesquely in a valley and blessed with majestic mountain views, it is one of the most beautiful hill stations in Sikkim.

The word ‘Yuksom’ literally means ‘meeting place of the three lamas,’ referring to the monks who gathered here from Tibet to select the first king of Sikkim. Ideal for summer holidays, camping and trekking, Yuksom Tourism offers a complete holiday experience.

Trekking enthusiasts can have a great time with a Yuksom Tour. The destination is also an excellent spot for bird watching, forest walks, waterfall hiking and village walks. It is a famous Buddhist pilgrimage site because of the highly revered Dubdi Monastery.

History of Yuksom suggests that it was the earliest capital of Sikkim where Phuntsog Namgyal, the first king, was coronated. Founded in 1642 A.D. by Phuntsog himself, the Namgyal dynasty ruled for nearly 333 years.

Following are the main travel attractions of Yuksom:

Dubdi Monastery
Also lovingly called the Yuksom Monastery, this is a famous Buddhist monastery of the Nyingma sect of Tibetan Buddhism. Established in 1701 by Chogyar Namgyal, it is the first monastery in the region and an important part of the Buddhist pilgrimage circuit.

The monastery features intricate interior paintings. Statues of the three monks responsible for establishing Yuksom are also enshrined here, drawing Buddhists from around the world.

Tashi TenkaTashi Tenka
Now in ruins yet still impressive, Tashi Tenka recalls the glorious days when Yuksom served as the capital of Sikkim. It was a royal complex set on an elevated area in the south.

Although only stones remain today, the site serves as an excellent vantage point for capturing mesmerising views of Yuksom town.

Coronation Throne of Norbugang
This site holds great historical and religious importance as it marks the place where the first King of Sikkim, Phuntsog Namgyal, was coronated by three learned monks from Tibet in 1641 A.D.

It is also believed that monks assembled here to preach Buddhism. A park surrounds the site with a prayer hall, prayer wheel, Norbugang shrine and the revered coronation throne.

Kathok Wodsallin Gompa
This is a newly constructed monastery located opposite Kartok Lake. It is named after one of the three lamas who coronated the first king of Sikkim. The monastery features an impressive statue of Guru Padmasambhava enclosed in a glass chamber.
