Mirik: The Land of Orange Orchards in West Bengal

Mirik

There is no greater artist than nature. With its mesmerising and fascinating palette of colours, nature paints the world with bold strokes and confident hues—enough to explain why every artist is inspired by it.

Come and experience the beauty of nature’s painted canvas with Mirik Tourism. Among nature’s many masterpieces, Mirik is one stunning creation resting tenderly in the white folds of the Himalayas. Appearing to rise from the mountains, this charming town is a perfect blend of natural splendour and tranquillity.

Tucked away in serene forested hills, Mirik is an enticing hill station situated in West Bengal. Along with its captivating scenery, the town is also a major supplier of oranges for the state. Over the years, Mirik has evolved into a popular honeymoon and holiday destination for both locals and tourists.

Mirik Tourism offers picnicking, sightseeing, nature strolls, forest walks, trekking, camping, boating, and visits to several religious sites. Visitors can enjoy enchanting orange orchards and capture scenic photographs amidst the lush green tea estates.

It was Siddhartha Shankar Ray, the then Chief Minister of West Bengal, who initiated the development of the area, which was used solely for tea plantations before 1974. A new lake and a day centre were built and later inaugurated by the next Chief Minister, Jyoti Basu—thus beginning Mirik’s journey as a hill station.

Non-vegetarians can indulge in delectable local fish dishes, often fried or cooked in spicy gravy.

Following are the main travel attractions of Mirik

Sumendu Lake

Sumendu Lake: Surrounded by beautiful gardens on one side and towering pine trees on the other, Sumendu or Mirik Lake is a prime attraction. This serene man-made lake offers a soothing experience whether you sit along its banks or stroll across the arching Indreni Bridge connecting its two sides.

On the western bank lies the Dhupi Forest, perfect for nature walks. A small temple called Devi Sthan is nestled within the forest. Pony rides are available near the lake, making it enjoyable for children. Couples can revel in the romantic atmosphere, enhanced by lush greenery and the distant view of snow-capped Mount Kangchenjunga.

Bokar Gompa: Perched atop a hill, Bokar Gompa is a beautiful and brightly coloured monastery belonging to the Mahayana sect of Buddhism. Monks here can be seen creating intricate mandala rangolis.
The monastery also doubles as an excellent vantage point offering panoramic views of Mirik town, dotted with pine-covered hills and snowy mountain ranges.

Rameetay Dara: This stunning viewpoint is popular among tourists who come to witness the breathtaking sunrise and sunset. It also offers sweeping views of the Himalayan plains and is located close to Kawlay Dara and Bokar Gompa.

Kawlay Dara is another vantage point offering magnificent views of the snow-laden Himalayas and rich surrounding greenery. Don’t forget your camera—you won't want to miss capturing nature’s masterpiece where the sky becomes the canvas and the divine the painter.

Rai Dhap: An ideal picnic spot, Rai Dhap features a small lake that supplies potable water to Mirik. Visitors can explore lush tea gardens, beautiful cardamom plantations and rich orange orchards nearby. The town has nearly eight tea gardens and produces some of the finest Darjeeling tea.

Excursions from Mirik: Kurseong (10km) and Darjeeling (50km) are ideal nearby getaways.

Durga Puja

Shopping in Mirik: Oranges and aromatic tea are the most popular items to purchase. Pashupati Market is a paradise for shoppers—especially women—looking for affordable and quality cosmetics. Clothes imported from Thailand are also available.

When to Reach: The best time to visit is from mid-April to June when the weather is pleasant and ideal for sightseeing. Durga Puja (September–October) is another popular time to explore the destination.

How to Reach
Air: Bagdogra Airport is 55 km from the town, and taxis are easily available from there.
Rail: Jalpaiguri railhead, about 60 km away, receives trains from Kolkata, Delhi and Mumbai.
Road: Buses and private cabs operate regularly for travel within and around Mirik.
