Gyalshing: The Hotspot of Rhododendrons

GyalshingThere is no better expression to describe the beauty of Gyalshing than these great words of Keller. Though you can see or touch the mountains or Gompas around, but only the heart can sense the beauty that can be seen in the simplicity and genuineness of the people.

Though every part of this state is drenched in beauty, Gyalshing in west Sikkim has a charm of its own. It is the capital of West Sikkim district and is known for its rhododendron's population. Set amidst the towering Mount Kanchenjunga and interspersed with pine and fir forests, this is a perfect summer holiday destination.


Travel to Gyalshing to witness beautiful monasteries, hills, forests, waterfalls and lakes. Tree-huggers can enjoy the vast spread of Rhododendron Sanctuary and admire the beauty when the flowers are in their full bloom.

The word 'Gyalshing' means the 'King's garden'. History suggests that the destination served as a royal garden and was attached to the Rabdentse Palace till late 18th century. Not far from the destination is Yuksom which was the ancient capital of Sikkim built in 1642.

Apart from trekking, mountain climbing and nature sightseeing, travellers can munch on some sumptuous dishes made of salmon and trout fishes and also enjoy bird watching.

Sanga Choeling Monastery
Built in 1695 by Lama Lhatsun Chempo, this monastery is believed to be the second oldest monastery in Sikkim. The word 'sanga choeling' literally translates to 'island of the Guhyamantra teachings.' The monastery has been rebuilt several times after being affected by the fire.

The monastery houses clay statues belonging to 17th century. There are also several beautiful paintings and murals in the Gompa like the painting of a saint, a drummer, mythical characters and Wheel of life.

On every 10th day of the Tibetan calendar, lamas sing hymns in the monastery. Visit the site during morning hours and you will see the lamas assembled in the main temple and reciting morning prayers. The entire ambiance is serene and soothing to the soul.


Varsey Rhododendron SanctuaryVarsey Rhododendron Sanctuary
Blessed with stunning view of Mount Kanchenjunga, Varsey Rhododendron Sanctuary is a popular upbeat trekking destination in Sikkim. There are dense rhododendron forests that bloom during the month of March and April. The beautiful hues of these flowers ranging from white to yellow, red and blue add colour to the hills.

The sanctuary is perched at a height of 12000 ft and spread over 104 sq km. Exotic animals like red panda and black bear are also sometimes spotted in the sanctuary. Forests of oak, magnolia, pine, fir and other alpine trees are also seen here adding to the beauty of the destination.

Yangtey
This is a panoramic spot from where the glorious beauty of Kanchenjunga can be admired. It is a small hamlet, nearly 106km away from Gangtok. The site also offers arresting views of peaks like Frey, Pandim, Narsing and Rathong.

During monsoons, it’s almost like walking through the clouds and the weather turns even more romantic. There are also several waterfalls nearby the region like Kanchenjunga and Rimbi waterfalls.

Pelling (10km) and Jorethang (40km) are some of the ideal escapes to explore around.

The Gyalshing Bazaar around 100 years old, lauded for ethnic souvenirs from Sikkim.

Try the spicy noodles and you will love it! Items made from wood, wool and bamboo by the locals can also be purchased.


Saga Dawa festivalWhen to Reach
The best time to make your trip to Gyalshing is in October or November. Saga Dawa festival (June) is also a sought after time to indulge into the local culture of the town.

Air: The nearest airport is in Bagdogra, 75km away from the town.
Rail: The closest railhead is in Darjeeling, 31km away from the destination.
Road: Direct buses are available from Gangtok and nearby towns for the destination.
