Digha: Brighton of the East

Digha

Sun, sand, and the sea — can there be a better way to celebrate your holiday, especially in West Bengal? We bet there isn’t! Come and explore an unspoiled beach destination where you’ll find fewer crowds, less noise, and more solitude — or even better, just indulge in some blissful, aimless vacationing.

Digha is a small but perfect seaside resort town located in the East Midnapore district of West Bengal. Travel to Digha for its soft, golden sands, beautiful beachfront resorts, and clear blue waters. Rows of casuarina trees lining the coast add to the natural beauty of this charming destination.

Digha Tourism is all about enjoying the calm, less crowded beaches, horse riding, bird watching, village walks, and nature trails. The beach’s shallow and gentle waves make it ideal for swimming, jet skiing, scuba diving, and surfing.

Also known as Beerkul, this coastal town was discovered in the late 18th century. The history of Digha reveals that John Frank Snaith, an English businessman, began living here in 1923, and his writings brought attention to the area. Warren Hastings, the first Governor-General of India, described it as the “Brighton of the East” in one of his letters to his wife, Mary Hastings.

Several benches and food stalls are set up along the beach, making it perfect for leisurely walks. Visit in the morning to enjoy “hing er kochuri,” Digha’s most popular breakfast. You can also savor authentic Bengali cuisine served at local hotels and beachside stalls.

Following are the main travel attractions of Digha:

Digha Science Centre: Have you ever seen a planetarium shaped like an Eskimo’s igloo? If not, visit the Digha Science Centre and be amazed by its many fascinating exhibits. There’s a Jurassic Park section explaining the age of dinosaurs, an amusing glass wall that lets you measure your height, and even a quirky display of skeletons in a bicycle race! Learning science here becomes a fun and interactive experience. The center offers excellent educational value for both children and adults.

Marine Aquarium and Regional Centre

Marine Aquarium and Regional Centre: Established in 1989, this center aims to educate visitors about marine life and promote research. It houses the largest marine aquarium in India, featuring 24 large tanks and 8 freshwater tanks with a modern inflow-outflow water system and air supply.

More than 20 species of fish are preserved here. Sharks, crabs, sea snakes, and octopuses are among the main attractions. Plans are also underway to introduce rare fish species from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Udaipur Beach: Witness authentic Bengali fishing boats gliding toward the shore with their first catch of the day amid the dramatic waves of Udaipur Beach in Digha. You’ll also spot various species of crabs, each an intricate masterpiece of nature with beautiful patterns and colors.

Visit early in the morning to see the fishermen’s wives performing prayers and offerings to the sea god, seeking blessings for safe voyages. This ritual, known as Nauka Puja, is held daily near the beach.

Dipak Mitra’s Snake Farm: This offbeat attraction draws curious visitors from across the world. The farm is known for breeding and housing a wide range of poisonous snakes and is especially significant to local snake farmers who earn their livelihood from these reptiles.

The farm was established by Dr. Deepak Mitra, a renowned Indian herpetologist. His vision was to protect and breed snakes to enhance the production of anti-venom used in treating snake bites. Nearby lies Amarabati Lake, known for its lush gardens, serene waters, and a small amusement park.

Excursions from Digha: Tajpur (17 km), Mandarmani (30 km), and Junput (40 km) are popular nearby attractions worth exploring.

Handwoven Mats

Shopping in Digha: Handwoven mats made of natural reeds are among Digha’s most sought-after souvenirs. Shoppers can also buy conch shells (shankhs), shell jewelry, colorful cotton lampshades, and cashew nuts.

Take a stroll along the old Digha Beach to explore charming stalls selling vibrant decorative items, seafood snacks, and an array of pearls and shell trinkets.

When to Visit: The best time to visit is between November and March, when the weather is pleasant and humidity is low. The Durga Puja Festival (September–October) is also an excellent time to experience the festive spirit and plan your trip to Digha.

How to Reach
Air: The nearest airport is in Kolkata, about 210 km away.
Rail: Several direct local trains operate from Howrah to Digha.
Road: Regular buses run from Esplanade and Howrah, but local trains are generally more economical.

So this year, plan a trip to Digha and experience one of the most vibrant and refreshing sides of West Bengal — a blend of festivity, color, and life by the sea!
