Overview

Rajkot: The Nostalgic British Architectural Past of Gujarat

A popular trade centre of Gujarat, the vibrant city of Rajkot has a rich historical legacy. This fourth-largest city is located along the banks of the Aji and Nyari Rivers. The colonial history of Rajkot is reflected in its majestic architecture.

Rajkot was founded by Thakur Saheb Vibhaji Ajoji Jadeja of the Jadeja Dynasty in 1612 A.D. In 1720 A.D., Masum Khan renamed the city Masumabad, but the Jadejas later reclaimed it and restored the name Rajkot. During the rule of Pradumansingh Jadeja, the city merged with the Republic of India. The British made notable architectural contributions during their reign. After independence, Rajkot briefly served as the capital of the State of Saurashtra.

Following are the main attractions of Rajkot:

Located in Jubilee Gardens, it preserves artefacts from the time of the Mohenjodaro civilisation. The museum also safeguards taxidermy exhibits, colonial memorabilia, and ivory artefacts.
