Panaji

Overview

Panaji: Small but Spirited Capital of Goa

Panaji (or Panjim) is the small yet vibrant capital of Goa. The name 'Panaji' means 'town that never floods'. The town sparkles with Baroque bastions, sandy beaches, and Portuguese ambience. Situated on the banks of the Mandovi River, Panaji is both charming and enchanting.

Historically, Panaji saw the rule of the Kadambas, Chalukyas, and Satavahanas at different times. Most architectural developments occurred under the Muslim ruler Adil Shah. During the 16th century, the Portuguese made Panaji the capital city of Goa.

Main Attractions in Panaji

Fort Aguada: Built between 1609-1612, this large and well-preserved Portuguese fort controlled entry into the Mandovi River and protected Old Goa from enemy attacks. Named after a freshwater spring inside the fort, it supplied water to visiting ships.

Basilica of Bom Jesus: This world-famous basilica houses the tomb and mortal remains of Saint Francis Xavier (d. 1552). It is one of India’s finest examples of Baroque architecture and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Intricate carvings make it one of Goa’s most visually impressive churches.

Miramar Beach

Miramar Beach: Also known as Panaji Beach, it lies 1 km from where the Arabian Sea meets the Mandovi River. The beach is popular for its scenic beauty and proximity to the memorial of Goa’s first Chief Minister, Late Dayanand Bandodkar. It is also on the route to Dona Paula.

Saint Augustine Tower: This 46 m high tower, made of laterite, was built in 1602 by St. Augustinian friars. Religious orders were expelled in 1835, leaving the church abandoned and the convent decayed. Valuable items were sold or lost, and the tower’s bell was eventually moved to the Church of Our Lady of Immaculate Conception.

Excursions from Panaji: Nearby attractions include Old Goa (9 km) and Mangueshi Temple (21 km).

Shopping in Panaji: Visitors can buy designer clothes, accessories, and shoes. Local specialties include trinkets made of sea shells, semi-precious stones, terracotta pottery, embroidered items, and leather products.

Concerts and Carnivals

When to Visit
The best time to visit Panaji is from late October to early April. The city hosts various concerts and carnivals throughout the year, so checking the local calendar ensures you enjoy Panaji at its liveliest.
