Margao

Overview

Margao: Blend of Portuguese and Konkanese Culture

An important religious and agricultural center of medieval times, Margao today is considered the heart of Goa. This bustling market town attracts visitors from around the world, offering majestic beaches, historic churches, and a perfect blend of Portuguese and Konkanese culture.

Previously known as Madgoan, Margao was home to the Vaishnavas before Portuguese colonization. Many Hindu temples were present in the city, but during Portuguese settlement, several temples were destroyed, and Christianity became the dominant religion. Margao flourished as a commercial hub during Portuguese rule.
