Kutch

Overview

Kutch: The World's Largest Salt Desert

The great land of Kutch is far from the typical image of parched lands. Located 72 km from Bhuj in Gujarat, Kutch is the world's largest salt desert. This flat, tortoise-shaped region derives its name from the local word 'Kachbo' meaning 'Tortoise'. During the monsoon months, Kutch is submerged in water, while for the rest of the year, its vast white salt flats mesmerize visitors.

The region is famous for Chir Batti or ghost lights, a mysterious phenomenon of dancing lights at night. Kutch was home to the Indus Valley Civilization and later became an independent kingdom in the late 13th century under the Jadeja Dynasty. After India's independence in 1947, it was integrated into the Indian Union as an independent commissionaire.

Main Attractions of Kutch:

Bhuj: The most important city of Kutch, Bhuj was heavily affected by the 2001 earthquake. Formerly the capital of the princely state of Kutch, Bhuj is a maze of alleys featuring fine examples of Gujarati architecture in temples and traditional houses.

Narayan Sarovar: A scenic area with multiple lakes near the Gulf of Kutch. It is one of the oldest and holiest places for Hindus. Birdwatchers can spot flamingoes here, and the nearby Narayan Sarovar Sanctuary is home to various wildlife species, including the endangered Chinkara, with 80% of India’s population found in Kutch.

Koteshwar Temple

Koteshwar Temple: Dedicated to Lord Shiva, this temple is perched on a high cliff overlooking the sea, marking the westernmost point of human settlement in India. According to legend, King Ravana was granted a Shiva Linga here, which became multiplied into thousands upon being dropped, leading to the construction of the temple known as Koteshwar.

Aaina Mahal: Built in the 18th century under the rule of Lakhpatji, this palace now serves as a museum. Famous for its 'Hall of Mirrors', it features white marble walls adorned with mirrors and gilded ornaments. Designed in Indo-European style by European-trained artisan Ramsinh Malam, it is an architectural marvel.

Excursions from Kutch: Nearby destinations include Purneshwar (36 km) and Anjar (41 km).

Shopping in Kutch: Kutch markets are famous for embroidered handicrafts, decorative carved wood, mud craft, pottery, silver craft, Rogan art, and hand-woven textiles.

Rann UtsavWhen to Visit: The best time to explore Kutch is from October to January. The Rann Utsav, a 3-month festival organized by the Gujarat government, is also an ideal time to experience Kutch’s culture and landscapes.

How to Reach:
Air: Bhuj Airport connects Kutch to major Indian cities like Mumbai.
Rail: Bhuj is well-linked by train to cities such as Ahmedabad, Delhi, and Mumbai.
Road: Scenic road journeys to Bhuj are available via state and national highways, with regular bus services from neighboring towns.
