Overview

Jamnagar: The Oil City of Gujarat

Lauded as the Jewel of Kathiawar, Jamnagar is a vibrant city full of color and religious ambiance. Founded by Shri Jam Raval, successor of Jam Halla, in 1540 AD, the city has witnessed numerous historical events, from the Mughal era to modern India. Historically known as Nawanagar, it was an important princely state ruled by the Jadejas for over 450 years.

Today, Jamnagar is a prosperous city, home to the world's largest oil refinery and several industrial hubs. Its markets, especially after sunset, display the vibrant and colorful Bandhani prints. The Jamnagar refinery, established in 1999, is a key landmark and industrial marvel.

Main Attractions of Jamnagar:

Lakhota Palace: Situated in the middle of Ranmal Lake, this fort was built as a famine relief project between 1839–1845 AD. It belonged to the Maharajah of Nawanagar. The fort features intricate gateways, carved balconies, and walls adorned with frescoes depicting the battles of the Jadeja Rajputs. Today, it houses a small museum showcasing wooden carvings, sculptures, and pottery from medieval times.

Jain Temples: In the bustling Chandi Bazaar, four exquisite Jain temples stand out. The Shantinath and Adinath temples are the largest, dedicated to the 16th and 1st tirthankaras. The temples feature elegant chandeliers, murals, and mirrored domes. Shantinath Temple, in particular, boasts colorful columns and murals depicting the lives of Jain saints.

Khijadiya Bird SanctuaryKhijadiya Bird Sanctuary: A unique sanctuary near the coast, surrounded by marshlands. Though small, it hosts a wide variety of resident and migratory birds, especially in winter, including pelicans, cranes, cormorants, herons, egrets, spoonbills, and black-necked storks. Aquatic vegetation thrives here as well.

Marine National Park: Established in 1982, India’s first Marine National Park spans 458 sq km and comprises 42 islands. It shelters rich aquatic life including coral lichen, sponges, puffer fish, crabs, sea anemones, starfish, sea turtles, and dolphins. Migratory birds take refuge in the mangroves during winters. The endangered Chowsingha, the world’s only four-horned antelope, can also be spotted here.

Solarium: Built by Jam Ranjit Singhji under the guidance of French doctor Jean Saidman, this unique solarium used solar radiation to treat TB and rheumatism. Various types of glass panes could be rotated to follow the sun throughout the day.

Shopping in Jamnagar: Jamnagar is famous for Bandhani prints. Other popular items include brass inlaid bangles, beetle nut crackers, Kumkum, Kajal, Surma, and brass-covered wooden chests.

Excursions from Jamnagar: Ideal nearby getaways include Junagadh (138 km) and Dwarka (144 km).

JanmashtamiWhen to Visit: The best time to explore Jamnagar is during the winter season from October to January. The festival of Janmashtami (August) is also a culturally rich time to visit.
