Kottayam

Overview

Kottayam: The City of Lakes, Latex and Leather

Located in southern Kerala, Kottayam has earned the name "Akshara Nagar" (City of Letters) because of its rich contribution to literature and print media. Even today, ‘Malayala Manorama’ (published here) continues to be one of the most widely read newspapers in India. Kottayam is the administrative capital of the district and an important trading centre for spices and commercial crops. The world-renowned Indian author Arundhati Roy’s novel “The God of Small Things” introduced Kottayam to the global map.

The history of Kottayam has witnessed several political upheavals, unifications and re-unifications. The Kottayam Palace and the Thaliyil Fort reflect the region’s vibrant past. It was once ruled by the Kings of Thekkumkoor before being annexed by Travancore in the 18th century. During the colonial period, it continued under Travancore’s rule. In 1949, it was declared a district, and in 1957, it officially became part of the state of Kerala.

Following are the main attractions of Kottayam:
