Its thriving automobile industry has earned it the nickname 'Detroit of India.' Over the past decade, Chennai has also emerged as a major tourist destination, showcasing the cultural diversity and history of South India.

The city's history includes cloth merchants, spice traders, and seafarers with trade links to Babylonians, Romans, Phoenicians, Greeks, and Chinese.
