Yuru Kabgyat: A Victory of Good over Evil

Festivals are a reason to smile, dance, and celebrate life. Yuru Kabgyat, a two-day festival, is a major tourist attraction in Ladakh. It is celebrated at the Lamayuru Monastery, about 127 km from Leh, attracting Buddhist devotees from Korea, Tibet, Japan, and beyond. The festival, held in July–August, features dance dramas and colorful masks.

The Cham dance, integral to Mahayana Buddhist festivals, traces its origin back to the 8th century. At Lamayuru Monastery, monks perform sacred rituals, chants, and mesmerizing performances.

Main Attractions of Yuru Kabgyat Festival

Cham Dance
Monks gather from all over Ladakh to perform this ritual. Masks, crafted with Papier-mâché, represent mythological figures. Dancers move in circular patterns to the rhythm of drums, pipes, and cymbals.

Cham Dance Key figures include Yama (Lord of Death) and Lord Padmasambhava, an incarnation of Buddha and protector of wealth and animals. The dance culminates with sacrificial offerings.

The festival’s mythological roots tell of Nimagon, a spiritual figure who prayed to the Naga Serpent spirits to drain the waters covering the Ladakh Valley. Grains offered to the spirits magically formed a Yungdrung (Swastika), giving rise to Yungdrung Gompa.

Sacrificial Offering
At the climax, a human figure made of dough is symbolically destroyed by the Black Hat dancers’ leader, representing the triumph of good over evil and the cleansing of the soul.
