Lonavala

The best resting place in Maharashtra's paradise

Walwan Dam Lonavala

Lonavala is a hill station located in the Pune district of Maharashtra, peacefully nestled within the Sahyadri Ranges. Its salubrious climate, scenic views, natural caves and ethereal beauty have made Lonavala one of the most sought-after hill stations for honeymoon trips as well as casual leisure exploration.

In 1811, Sir Elphinstone, the then Governor of Bombay, was the first to formally document Lonavala. Its earlier name, ‘Lonali’, was derived from the dense forests that surrounded the region. In Sanskrit, the term ‘Layan’ means a resting place, while the Prakrit translation refers to ‘a resting place carved out of stone.’ Historically, the region was once part of the Yadava Empire.

The Mughals later took over the territory following the fall of the Yadava Empire. Subsequently, the Marathas and the Peshwas regained control, contributing significantly to the cultural richness of Lonavala. In 1818, the British took possession of the region. They developed Lonavala as a recreational and hunting retreat, which eventually evolved into a popular travel destination. The forts and ancient monuments scattered across the region reflect its layered historical past.

Following are the main attractions in Lonavala:

Rajmachi Point: This viewpoint offers a spectacular view of the Rajmachi Fort. The fort complex consists of two fortified structures—Manaranjan Fort and Shrivardhan Fort. Located about 15 km from Lonavala, it is also a popular trekking destination.

Ryewood Park: This picturesque park offers a calm and peaceful environment to visitors. With its natural ambience, green lawns and well-maintained landscaping, it serves as an ideal picnic spot. Several varieties of flowers enhance its unique beauty.
