Mumbai is an archipelago of seven islands with a long and layered history. Archaeological findings suggest habitation since the Stone Age, while documented records date back to around 250 BC. During the 3rd century BC, the islands formed part of the Maurya Empire. In 1534, the Portuguese acquired the islands from the Sultan of Gujarat and later ceded them to Charles II of England in 1661 as part of the dowry of Catherine of Braganza. The islands were subsequently leased to the British East India Company in 1668.
