Lamayuru Monastery Ladakh: Charm of Tibetan Buddhism

Jammu and Kashmir“India chose her places of pilgrimage wherever there was in nature some special grandeur or beauty, so that her mind could come out of its world of narrow necessities and realise its place in the infinite (God).”

Lamayuru Monastery, a Tibetan Buddhist Monastery is located on Srinagar-Leh highway in Ladakh validates the beauty of these above written lines. Long back the great Indian Poet Rabindranath Tagore had penned down these words in his world book 'Sadhana - The Realisation of Life' to throw light on the pilgrim destinations of India.

It is one of the largest and the oldest monasteries in Ladakh. 50 Buddhist monks meditate in this monastic destination. It is also called as ‘Yuru Gompa,’ and was established in the 11th century. The amalgamation of Tibetan and Indian art in this monastery is quite rare.

The exquisite appeal of Lamayuru Monastery Travel can be explained through ‘majestic statues’, ‘archaic scriptures’, ‘captivating murals,’ and ‘fascinating wall paintings.’ So, if you are craving for a spiritual rendezvous in Ladakh, do indulge in Lamayuru Monastery Tour. You will be amazed to figure out how much this monastery resembles the other Buddhist shrines.

Do not miss witnessing the two-day Yuru Kabgyat Festival celebrated here in July. Hundreds of Buddhist devotees visit the monastery during this captivating festival.

Following are the main travel attractions of Lamayuru Monastery:

Presumably this monastery had 5 buildings when it came into existence, however only one building remains now. Primarily the Gompa consists of one assembly hall called Dukhang, the main temple or Gonkhang along with some residential buildings that homes around 150 monks.

Dukhang
It is a major tourist attraction in Lamayuru Monastery. This is the assembly hall situated on the right side of the courtyard. The wall paintings on the left reveal the daily life principles of a lama. The entrance verandah to the wall is beautifully painted and has a depiction of the Guardians of the four directions.
Legend has it that Lamayuru Valley earlier was a lake with holy serpents living in it. Naropa who was a Buddhist scholar during 11th century came to Lamayuru and meditated for years in a cave, which can still be seen in this part of the monastery.
He later caused a split in the hillside which led to the emptying of the lake. Naropa found a dead lion in the shallowness of the lake and built the first temple here, called as the Singhe Ghang. The hall also holds the Naropa Cave where Naropa had meditated for years, thus the statue of Naropa in the cave holds importance.
On the right side of the Dukhang is the book case that preserves the Kandshur- the 108 volumes of the Lord Buddha's teachings.

Jammu and KashmirAvalokitesvara Temple
This temple stands away from the main part of the monastery and is dedicated to Lord Avalokitesvara. Opposite to its entrance is an ancient eight foot high image of Avalokitesvara with 1,000 arms and eyes in each hand that depict his strength and power. It also has a collection of the smaller images of Avalokitesvara and Lord Padmasambhava.

Gonkhang
This is the temple devoted to the guardian deities of Buddhism. There are glass cases in the temple exhibiting the image of Mahakala- the guardian of Buddhism, Apshi- a guardian of the Gompa, Radha Shree- founder of the religious sect to which Lamayuru belongs and lastly another Apshi riding a horse. In front of the cases is Tara, wife of Avalokitesvara in all her twenty-one manifestations.

Singhe Ghang Temple
Believed to be the first temple built in Lamayuru, this temple has some amazing wall murals dating back to 10th century. The chief representation here includes that of Nirvana- the Teaching Buddha sitting on a lion throne along with Garuda-the mythical bird.
